My name is Darcy and I am a professional painter with over 20 years of experience. I recently started my own company because I wanted to offer high-quality painting services that meet my standards of excellence. In this text, I will share with you my background, my journey back to Canada after 20 years abroad, and my motivation for starting my own business.
I began painting in my teens in Edmonton, where I learned the skills and techniques of the trade from seasoned painters. I enjoyed painting and took pride in my work, always striving to do a flawless job. I painted until my late 30s, when I decided to pursue a different career path. In 2001, I moved from North Vancouver to China, where I taught English to students of various ages and levels for 10 years. After that, I relocated to Thailand and continued teaching at universities for another 10 years. Teaching was rewarding and challenging.
In 2020, I returned to Canada after two decades away. It was a huge adjustment for me, as many things had changed in the country and in the workplace. I was shocked by the low standards and poor work ethics that I encountered in the painting industry. Some of the things that I witnessed were unacceptable and unprofessional. For example:
- Workers would wear headphones and listen to music or talk on the phone while working, which was distracting and unsafe.
- Workers would skip work without notice or explanation, and face no consequences from their employers.
- Workers would disrespect their supervisors and co-workers, using insults and expletives when given feedback or instructions.
- Workers would do the bare minimum required to finish the job, without caring about the quality or customer satisfaction.
These behaviors were not only disrespectful to me as a foreman, but also to the clients who paid for the services. I could not tolerate this kind of attitude and performance. I realized that I had a different vision and value for painting than most of the people I worked with. I wanted to restore the dignity and pride of the trade that I had learned from my mentors. That's why I decided to start my own company.
My company is based on three principles: quality, professionalism and customer satisfaction. I only hire painters who share these principles and who are willing to work hard and learn from me. I train them to follow the best practices and techniques of painting, as well as to respect the clients and their properties. I supervise every project personally and ensure that it meets my high standards of excellence. I also communicate with the clients throughout the process and address any concerns or requests they may have.
